Four Avenues of Service
The Four Avenues of Service are Rotary's philosophical
cornerstone
and the foundation on which club activity is
based: |
|
Club Service |
|
 |
This means that friendship and acquaintanceship is the
first step in the opportunity of service. This avenue
focuses the importance of the club, its weekly meetings,
the friendships developed there and other aspects of the
club, which provide the opportunity to serve others.
|
|
Vocational Service |
This object urges each Rotarian to foster high ethical
standards in his business or profession and to recognize
the worthiness and dignity in all useful occupations. By
serving in one's vocation, a person is able to serve
society.
|
 |
|
Community Service |
|
 |
Each Rotarian and Rotary Club can apply the ideal of
service to improve the life of the community. This
avenue of service takes many forms, such as in youth
activities, community betterment projects, aid to the
needy and hundreds of other projects.
|
|
International Service |
This avenue focuses on the importance of advancing
international understanding, good will and peace
throughout the worldwide fellowship of Rotary. Here you
will see world community service projects, Rotary
Foundation Awards, international youth exchanges,
activities to promote goodwill and understanding, and
many other aspects of world fellowship.

PolioPlus Campaign |
|
In 1985, Rotary launched the PolioPlus program to protect
children worldwide from the cruel and fatal consequences of
polio. In 1988, the World Health Assembly challenged the
world to eradicate polio. Since that time, Rotary's efforts
and those of partner agencies, including the World Health
Organization, the United Nations Children's Fund, the United
States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and
governments around the world, have achieved a 99 percent
reduction in the number of polio cases worldwide. Rotarians
stand at the brink of a great victory and look forward to
celebrating the global eradication of polio in 2005, the
organization's centennial year. |

"It is well that there is nothing in Rotary so sacred
that it cannot be set aside in favor of things better.
This is an experimental age in a changing world, and all
things which are worthwhile and progressive are the
cumulative effects of preceding successes and failures."
Paul Harris
