Sparrow Village
Rotary Tsunami Reconstruction Suggestion
As Rotarians we can help...

Sparrow Village is a working model that can provide jobs and provide a place for the homeless. Rotary Clubs may be interested in helping Rotarians in the Tsunami disaster areas interested in reconstruction.

Below is a brief description of the proven and tested system that can be put into place in the shortest amount of time and at the least cost.

Introducing Rotary to Sparrow Village as a "performance model":

  • Sparrow Village will provide training for the area's homeless and unemployed with the skills to create and maintain these villages.
  • Those that are skilled brick-makers, masons, farmers, childcare providers, teachers, artists, craftsmen, nurses, caregivers …will have a place to use their skills.
  • As these workers have something to do, they develop self-esteem and gain pride by creating a safe place of dignity to care for the elderly, sick, crippled and orphans of the tsunami.
  • These villages will become communities adding responsible businesses and families to the local economy…faster than any other proven program.

This “model” reduces the time that would otherwise be spent on creating villages of less efficiency.

By contacting Sparrow Village, Rotarian can have a working project “model” on how to create a village with less effort and waste of money and time. Over 10 years of experience and “debugging" of Sparrow Village, will effectively increase the utility of donations, grants, and philanthropy, thus requiring less funding per village. Organizations joining, together, to build one village…leaves more funds available for other projects.

We can keep Sparrow Village running smoothly so the world can use this concept as a role model.

By using Sparrow Village as a role model...Rotary clubs, churches, corporations ... around the world can build these villages for the homeless, jobless, dying and add responsible businesses to the local economy ...without reinventing the process each time a hospice or orphanage is created.

Rotary has the system,
the knowledge,
the talent to help coordinate
a great humanitarian effort …

The Sparrow Village Project
was origninally promoted as a hospice solution for terminally ill children

"No Child Should Live or Die Alone!"

"I must have been bad or they wouldn't have sold me." Child prostitute

"The rebels asked me to join the army. I said no. They killed my younger brother. I changed my mind. I am good with guns." 10-year old child soldier

"My dream is to have education, then I will be able to take care of my brothers and sisters. I would like them to have education too." 15-year old AIDS orphan.

These are the children of the world...

What if Rotary Clubs around the world got together to see that
...No Child Would Die Alone?

Our history says we can make a difference...

  • Over 100,000 Rotary members and their families joined the Indian Government in January, 2001 immunizing over 150 Million children in one 24-hour period.
  • Besides raising funds, over one million men and women of Rotary have donated their time and personal resources to help immunize nearly
2 BILLION children in more than160 countries.
  • With energy, tenacity, persistence and the belief that people working together can make a difference...Rotary International went to the health ministries of some of the poorest countries in the world and offered to help fight polio….what if we did the same for the dying and homeless children of the world?

With the "World Family of Rotary
we can assure that...

No Child Will Die Alone!

"We have a responsibility towards our children, to care for them and defend them."

Words or statistics cannot adequately capture the human tragedy of the children...lost, abandoned, sick, ignored and grieving for deceased loved ones.

Cancer, AIDS, pneumonia, or even common childhood diseases can be too much for an extended family to bear...so...the child becomes homeless, unprotected and alone on the streets...stigmatized by society through their possible association with HIV/AIDS.

Whatever the reason - the results are the same.

These children are left alone, alone … to die.

Children are left to care for children and they struggle without services or a support system of any kind.

They live, unprotected, in impoverished communities surrounded by violence and despair.

Sparrow Village -
a hospices role model for dying Children

Outside of Johannesburg, South Africa is a village that is a multi-layered empowering system - that is a perfect role model for children's hospices...
Sparrow Village, was founded on February 14, 1992 by Rev. Corine McClintock. Since it's opening, the reality of AIDS is a daily challenge. From hopeless, helpless individuals who stand outside the doors- to the children with their brave smiles looking for someone to love - the lives of those who work at Sparrow Village are surrounded by the biggest tragedy in human history.

"We refuse to be passive about this silent killer.

Our motto is and will always be
GET UP and LIVE!

No matter how long we live...live each day to the fullest. No matter how much energy we have... there is always something to do, someone to love, someone who needs care. Get up and live! This is what we offer those who come to us for care...a chance to live the rest of their lives to the fullest! "
Rev. Corine
McClintock

Sparrow Village is a multi-layered concept:

    • Teaching terminally ill patients become self-sufficient
by teaching self-care and how to use the time they have left
to help their family and themselves.
    • Teaching job training and skills to the homeless resulting in the creation and maintenance of the village.
    • Of great importance is the pride and self-esteem developed as these individuals create a place of dignity and care for the homeless and dying.
    • After perfecting their skills they leave the village to become entrepreneurs, adding responsible businesses and families to the economy of the local communities.
    • Creating a safe place for terminally ill children.
    • By 2010 there will be 44.2 million orphans in the world, not just in Africa and not just from AIDS
    • By 2010, about 70% of these orphans will have lost one or both parents to AIDS.

Let's give children a place to die with dignity and love...
And after we find a place for all these lost souls…
Let's give children a place to live with love and care...

"Nomsa Would Like to Thank You"

Nomsa was found near death. She had been clinging to her mother, who had died four days before they were found. With care and medicine, Nomsa lived her last days surrounded by love, warmth and smiles.

Without the safety of Sparrow, Nomsa would have been either on the streets or in a hospital waiting to die alone, in pain and in fear.
