Rotary International PolioPlus Campaign |
|
| In 1985, Rotary launched the PolioPlus program to protect children worldwide from the cruel and fatal consequences of polio. In 1988, the World Health Assembly challenged the world to eradicate polio. Since that time, Rotary's efforts and those of partner agencies, including the World Health Organization, the United Nations Children's Fund, the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and governments around the world, have achieved a 99 percent reduction in the number of polio cases worldwide. Rotarians stand at the brink of a great victory and look forward to celebrating the global eradication of polio in 2005, the organization's centennial year. | |

Dear Fellow Rotarians and visitors: I am excited to be able to offer you this very rare and valuable gift: an invitation to participate in an historic occasion of great significance! This is the first time that the private sector has ever been invited to take part in such a program. Please step this way into the history books! In the year 2005, Rotary International intends to complete the largest public health initiative in history! In doing so, we will have eliminated a villain that has crippled or killed millions of children. It is so serious a threat, that $350 million a year is spent just to immunize US children. Globally, it consumes as many hundreds of millions as we can make available. It also demands the involvement of millions of health care providers (including 10 million volunteers in developing countries). But we can end all of this now! And we can use your help. My enthusiasm for this historic opportunity has led me to volunteer as chairperson for the local area Rotary International PolioPlus effort. It also led Bill and Melinda Gates to offer a full match for the first $25 million contributed, and the World Bank to agree to excuse six out of every ten dollars loaned to qualified developing countries. This offer was met and gave a huge boost to this world wide program. This is where you come in! I am asking you to join the World Health Organization, UNICEF, the US Center for Disease Control, and major private sector participant Rotary International, in giving a final “one-two” punch to knock out polio! Any donation to PolioPlus Partners, which will continue social mobilization and surveillance of polio. The amount of money, time and energy that the eradication of Polio will release to other worthy tasks is astronomical. Won’t you help us with this goal? Rotary International is offering Paul Harris Fellow recognition for any contribution of $1000 or greater. We offer further recognition for contributions of even more substantial nature. Every amount is important is winning this fight. With less than two years to our goal...we need your support. Polio strikes mostly children under five. Let’s see that Polio is stopped FOREVER. Carol

"I
shall pass through this world but once. Any good therefore that I can
do or any kindness that I can show to any human being, let me do it now.
Let me not defer or neglect it, for I may not pass this way again." |
